Focus on how they act and how they think, not what they feel. If they're full of shit when they say they're not capable of feeling anything, then you're just taking baby steps; nothing wrong with that. But if they really don't have the capacity for that kind of thing, you won't be frustrating the both of you while you bang your head against the wall.
