It can feel like something that happens to you rather than something that you cause. [To them, it feels like both. The Admiral will decide when they have changed enough, and their experiences here will cause some of that change, but they can control some of it themself.]

It can. It's, ultimately, an arbitrary decision by a nearly unknowable authority figure. You do the work, but the Admiral has the final say.

I remember a time we wanted to kill him. ["We" because Norton did threaten him with a knife once when a flood brought Gaunt aboard.] Remarkable how much things change.

When I went home, right after I graduated, that really made things change. [He does remember Norton threatening Gaunt. He treasures that, even though his feelings about Gaunt have changed. He hadn't had anyone willing to kill for him, like that, before.] And being on the Barge. Quentin. I was a lot less angry.

Sort of? She's Shaw's wife, so I've hung around with her, but I can't say I really know her. She's not the sort of person you get to know easily.
