“Nothing much, but it was still something. You could have cut them off from supplies, or something similar. Like when we were paired the first time and you removed my powers. I still tried to kill Hakkai, but I was less successful than I would have been.”

"Maybe," he allows, "maybe we tied them up by not dying instantly and making them have to hide and fight more."

Different people need different things. And sometimes people just...need to feel bad for a while.

“If that were true, would it change how you feel?”

"A little. It would mean they didn't die for nothing."

[chaos_drifter]

“That could be a place to start, letting yourself feel like it had meaning.” This is going to take a while, and require more people than just them. Expressing his emotions could help, but if they have no idea how to express theirs, they also have no way of helping him express his.

[major_rawne]

"It could be," he allows, "it's certainly a better way of looking at the whole thing." This is what he likes about Avalon, they often offer a point of view he wouldn't have considered.

“Is it a realistic way of looking at it?” They might have seen it in the dream Flood, but seeing it and experiencing it are two different things.

"To some extent. Van Voytz likes Gaunt, he wouldn't send us to die for no reason. There was some strategy there, I'm sure." And Van Voytz wasn't, in his experience, the type of officer to throw lives away for no reason.

“Everyone in that situation made mistakes.” As far as they can tell. “Maybe you or your commanders learned something from it.”

"I fucking hope so. Otherwise they're idiots."

After Sheehan’s post, Avalon pulls a page out of one of their sketchbooks and draws tiny metallic whorls in the center of it, forming an orb. When they knock on Rawne’s door, they have it folded in their pocket, along with a few pens.

Rawne opens the door and backs up to let them in. "What brings you here today?"

“I was in a coma during the Breach, but I saw Sheehan’s post. I liked the idea of doing an exercise like that.” They wanted to talk to him, even if they had no idea what to talk about, and it felt like it had been a while.

[major_rawne]

"Sure. It sounded interesting." It's been a while since he's seen them and, especially after a Breach, he likes to catch up with people.

They pull out their page and unfold it, offering him one of their pens. He might recognize the orb they drew, or he might not. “How was the Breach?”

[major_rawne]

Rawne does recognize it and he taps the pen against the paper for a moment before drawing the main part of his bracelet beside it.

"It was... ok. I didn't do much. I was some kind of student sent back in time. Who were you?"

“I was in a coma, and I slept through the Breach.” They start sketching a humanoid figure, faceless and androgynous, holding both items near its chest. They play with the shading for a few moments, trying to add depth. “I think it lasted a couple of weeks.”

"Oh, that explains why I didn't see you there. I was pretty busy during the Breach. Trying to save some kind of treasure. I think." His memories have faded enough to make the whole thing blurry.

They finish shading and turn the page back to him. “Do your memories fade easily when the Breach is over?” They think their memories feel like a dream, but sometimes parts of their other selves stay with them.

[major_rawne]

He takes the page and starts drawing a face next to the figure, hovering in the air. "Usually, unless I write them down and try to remember. This one didn't seem worth the effort."

“I should write them down more often.” They had only written about two or three of theirs. “I usually do it when I think I can learn something from them.”

[major_rawne]

He finishes drawing the face and passes the paper back to them. "That's when I write them down, usually. When they're something I can learn from or something that was sufficiently strange."

[chaos_drifter]

They start giving the figure a face, its eyes glowing. When they finish and turn the page back to Rawne, they tap their pen on the face he had drawn. “Is that someone you know?”

[major_rawne]

"Not really one person," he says, "just... it's the way people from Tanith look. Looked."

[chaos_drifter]

“I hope you get paired soon,” they say, “so you can get it back.” It sounds wrong when they say it, but the warmth in their body tells them some of the emotion is there.
