I seem to be producing curious animals and objects that would normally have something in them. [A small vase appears, hitting their desk with a flat thunk.]
The empty objects come when I say something that would be associated with strong emotion if I were human. My words are missing something, and so are the objects.
::Oh.:: [They can feel their ability now, just like they could before they arrived here. Snatches of others’ thoughts seem to swirl in their mind, like what one might hear on a staticky radio. They focus on Rawne for a moment. His thoughts and feelings become sharper, but rush through their head too quickly for them to focus on anything other than his general emotions.] ::Thank you.:: [This time, nothing appears.]
::I can.:: [The energy of it is almost slippery — perhaps because the last time they used this ability was several months ago.] ::It worked.:: [No new objects are appearing. There are no sounds on their end, save for the tiny kitten mewling at them from the floor.]
[Would they hurt him?] ::I could hurt you, if I wanted to.:: [Avalon stares at him, trying to think about him the way they used to think about their victims. If they had met him before he graduated, he would have been someone they would push to commit murder, not someone they would target directly.
The idea of attacking him is strange, though. They know they feel connected to him, and they like that connection. They want to keep it, if only so that they can understand its nature.]
::I know you can. But that's why it's trust. Knowing someone can do something against you and knowing they won't.:: [Rawne looks back and Avalon, trying to read their expression. He doesn't think they'd hurt him, just to prove a point. They've stopped doing that kind of thing.]
::I think it would be difficult to know for certain. Anyone can be unpredictable.:: [They have no intention of hurting him just to prove a point, but people can have a habit of defying expectations.]
::If I knew for certain, it wouldn't be trust. Trust is required in the face of uncertainty and unpredictability.::. [That's a lesson it took Rawne a long time to learn.]
::Partly because I have power over you. Partly because... I think it's important, to trust that you're changing. If I trust you, then you won't start hurting people again. Does that make sense?::
::I think so.:: [In a way. It feels more like he trusts them to want to avoid punishment, but they may be wrong.]
::Out of curiosity, how close do you think I am to graduating?:: [Their identity seems to be in a gray area. They can think of being a murder as something they were rather than something they are, but they also have no idea who they are without that.]
