No, I don't intend any restrictions. The Admiral might, but he's a capricious jackass, so I don't know what those would be.

[They nod.] Good to know.

He cares enough to save people who would otherwise be dead, at least. Like me, I think he is detached from what it is like to be human, and that makes empathy difficult.

He cares sometimes. About some people.

Then again, most of us care about some people, not everyone. You can't care about everyone.

Who does he not care about?

The ones he lets slip away.

[Oh.] Maybe those people are needed more in their worlds than they are here.

Maybe. You're more charitable to the Admiral than I am. Maybe it's my experience with officers.

[They shrug.] I also have no memory of him, outside of what I have seen on the Network.

Plenty of strange things happen here, more than I think would happen if they were all controlled by one being. [Unless, like they did, the Admiral has found a working pattern, his own way of using others as a purpose.]

Oh, yeah, other people create problems all the time, too. It's not all the Admiral's fault. Just... a lot of it is.

[And Rawne still resents him for letting him go home for seven years and only reappearing with a deal when things were truly desperate.]

He does seem somewhat … distant, for all the power that he has. Especially with his ability to bring people here and send them away. [If he controls who disappears. They are beginning to think that he has less control over the disappearances than it might seem.]

He never shows his face. He does communicate, so he's better than some, but he's very absent.

Not even when you made your deal with him? [They understand that the Admiral would hide his identity from Inmates who might try to kill him, but hiding from Wardens seems like an odd choice.]

No, he appeared before me then. I was thinking of on the ship, that was back home.

Maybe he has something to hide.

Maybe. I don't know what that could be, though.

We have no idea how the Barge is powered, or why the Admiral does what he does. It might not only be for the sake of helping others.

True. It probably isn't. He is on the run from some kind of greater authorities.

Oh, that was before you got here. They caught up to us, once, and sent us to different ships for a while, before he found us again.

There are other ships like this?

Yeah. I have no clue where they are now, but they're out there.

Do they have similar purposes?

[major_rawne]

Yes. They went about it in different ways, but they were all intended to redeem people.

What did they have against the Admiral? Is his way … unconventional?

Perhaps. I'm not sure exactly what happened, as it was before I arrived, but he was on the run from the authorities he answers to. When they caught him, we were transferred.

If they had a system that was working for a long time and then failed for no apparent reason, I could see why they might be after him.

[Avalon traces their bracelet up their arm, stopping for a moment at the place where another bead should be.

Removing their bracelet will erase that as well.]
