Are you doing all right?

[Avalon is moving more slowly than usual, enough for someone who knows them to notice. Their body still hurts.] I got caught in the most recent string of deaths, but yes.

[They hold up their beads.] Does my file say anything about this?

[major_rawne]

[He points them towards the sofa.] Sit down, there's no point in hurting if you don't have to.

It does, a little. You have one bead for each person you killed. And it's a part of you.

[They sit down.] I slept through the worst of it, at least.

I was talking to Malcolm, and I realized that I might not want it to be part of me anymore. You said you trust me. Would you trust me with my ability to shapeshift? [Their tone is curious, not judging. They only used their shapeshifting as a weapon before it was locked away. It would make sense if they still needed to wait.]

[Rawne sits next to them. He chews on his lip for a moment.]

That depends on what you intend to do with it. If you just want to make the bracelet go away... perhaps.

I might want to use it to try out different bodies, but I am not planning to use it for murder.

[major_rawne]

Are you planning on copying people here?

[chaos_drifter]

No.

[major_rawne]

Ok. Good. That would be my main objection. I'm not sure if the Admiral will give it to you with no limits, but I'll ask him.

Do you need anything else?

[chaos_drifter]

No. [They can process what this means to them tomorrow.] Do you need anything? Are you planning on requesting restrictions that I should be aware of?

No, I don't intend any restrictions. The Admiral might, but he's a capricious jackass, so I don't know what those would be.

[chaos_drifter]

[They nod.] Good to know.

He cares enough to save people who would otherwise be dead, at least. Like me, I think he is detached from what it is like to be human, and that makes empathy difficult.

[major_rawne]

He cares sometimes. About some people.

Then again, most of us care about some people, not everyone. You can't care about everyone.

[chaos_drifter]

Who does he not care about?

[major_rawne]

The ones he lets slip away.

[chaos_drifter]

[Oh.] Maybe those people are needed more in their worlds than they are here.

[major_rawne]

Maybe. You're more charitable to the Admiral than I am. Maybe it's my experience with officers.

[chaos_drifter]

[They shrug.] I also have no memory of him, outside of what I have seen on the Network.

Plenty of strange things happen here, more than I think would happen if they were all controlled by one being. [Unless, like they did, the Admiral has found a working pattern, his own way of using others as a purpose.]

[major_rawne]

Oh, yeah, other people create problems all the time, too. It's not all the Admiral's fault. Just... a lot of it is.

[And Rawne still resents him for letting him go home for seven years and only reappearing with a deal when things were truly desperate.]

He does seem somewhat … distant, for all the power that he has. Especially with his ability to bring people here and send them away. [If he controls who disappears. They are beginning to think that he has less control over the disappearances than it might seem.]

[major_rawne]

He never shows his face. He does communicate, so he's better than some, but he's very absent.

[chaos_drifter]

Not even when you made your deal with him? [They understand that the Admiral would hide his identity from Inmates who might try to kill him, but hiding from Wardens seems like an odd choice.]

[major_rawne]

No, he appeared before me then. I was thinking of on the ship, that was back home.
